Govt To Release Draft Data Protection rules within a month

The executive guidelines for the enforcement of the DPDP Act will be released by the government, as stated by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the union minister of electronics and information technology.

Vaishnaw stated that the government has established the framework and structure for the implementation of rules, all of which will be carried out digitally.

"The simplicity of language approach which we have adopted for all bill will be seen (in the rules)," he said.

After the draft rules are published, stakeholders are expected to have 45-60 days to provide their input on the bill. A senior government official said the period could be prolonged if necessary. In July, the government engaged in thorough discussions with industry stakeholders concerning different elements of the bill, including the age gating matter.

Certain social media intermediaries had requested further explanation on Section 9 of the DPDP Act, which prohibits tracking children's behavior on digital platforms and some restrictions on targeted advertising for users under 18. The DPDP Act impacts technology and crucial economic sectors by setting rules for collecting, processing, and storing personal data.

India has implemented its initial regulation regarding digital personal privacy. Different forms of it have been in development for over ten years. In 2011, a group of experts led by former Delhi High Court Chief Justice AP Shah made the initial effort to establish this law.
