Himadri Speciality Chemical has agreed to a technology licensing arrangement with Australian battery materials company Sicona, making headway on their mission to localize advanced lithium-ion battery materials in India. The agreement gives Himadri exclusive rights to access, commercialize, and manufacture Sicona's proprietary Silicon-Carbon (SiCx) anode technology in India.
The SiCx technology aims to enhance energy density and charging performance in lithium-ion batteries by integrating silicon-carbon material into traditional graphite anodes. When used in 5-20% amounts, this material is expected to increase energy density by 20 percent and charging performance by 40 percent with longer range and faster charging times for electric vehicles.
Anurag Choudhary, Chairman, MD and CEO, Himadri Speciality Chemical, said, “This partnership marks a turning point in the world’s advanced battery materials journey. Sicona’s SiCx technology, when used alongside graphite, delivers two core advantages—higher energy density for longer driving range, and faster charging capability that dramatically reduces wait time for EV users."
Under the terms of this agreement, Sicona will provide technical assistance, including intellectual property, engineering assistance, qualification procedures, and quality systems for the setup of a SiCx manufacturing facility in India. The local operations and commercialization of the technology will be handled by Himadri based on their experience in chemicals and material operations.
Christiaan Jordaan, CEO and Co-Founder of Sicona, said, “This partnership marks a transformative moment for Sicona and our SiCx technology. It enables us to commercialise our breakthrough technology at an unprecedented speed and scale. Himadri’s world-class manufacturing capabilities and global presence make them the ideal partner for this journey. We are deeply grateful for their unwavering support to our team, our technology, and our mission.”
