Hyundai Motors to Establish Center of Excellence in IIT Madras

Hyundai Motors is poised to establish a Hydrogen Innovation Centre at the Thaiyur campus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, with an investment of Rs 180 crore. The foundation stone for the facility was laid by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin during the Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave. The centre will be built on a 65,000 square foot plot at the IIT Madras campus, located on the outskirts of Chennai.
This initiative represents a collaborative effort between Hyundai Motor India Ltd., the state-backed investment promotion agency Guidance Tamil Nadu, and IIT Madras. The goal of the partnership is to advance the hydrogen ecosystem and promote the adoption of hydrogen technology in India. This development aligns with Hyundai Motor India's objective of positioning Tamil Nadu as a hub for automotive innovation and alternative fuel advancements.
Professor V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, emphasized that the institute is honored to collaborate on this project, which will drive significant innovations in hydrogen mobility. He noted that the Hydrogen Innovation Centre is expected to foster a dynamic environment for startups and researchers working in the field of hydrogen technology.
Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer at Hyundai Motor India Ltd., expressed the company's commitment to supporting the Tamil Nadu Government's vision of a sustainable alternative fuel ecosystem. He anticipates that the new centre will play a crucial role in accelerating the adoption of hydrogen mobility in the region.
