By merging IBM's knowledge in sustainability and technology with WWF's vast background in wildlife preservation, the upcoming solution aims to enhance elephant tracking through the use of AI-driven visual inspection. This will assist in accurately identifying individual elephants from photos captured by camera traps. The aim of this AI solution is to aid key conservation efforts for African forest elephants, which have been proven to enhance carbon storage in their forest habitats.
In the future, organizations might utilize this technology to evaluate the monetary worth of the African forest elephants' contributions to people through nature's contributions to people (NCP), like carbon sequestration services, acknowledging their crucial function in sustaining balanced ecosystems.
Recent years have seen a reduction of over 80% in the populations of African forest elephants, primarily because of habitat loss and poaching in the Congo Basin. Supporting nature restoration can play an important role in reducing carbon emissions in the atmosphere as businesses address climate change.
By utilizing technology to monitor and assess natural capital's worth, businesses can discover fresh ways to aid in climate change prevention and locate sustainable finance options.
"At IBM, we strive to make a lasting, positive impact on the world in business, our environment, and the communities in which we work and live. Our collaboration with WWF marks a significant step forward in this effort. By combining our expertise in technology and sustainability with WWF's conservation expertise, we aim to leverage the power of technology to create a more sustainable future." - Oday Abbosh, Global Sustainability Services Leader, IBM Consulting.
