India aims Automotive, Telecom Sectors with 28 nm Chip Focus: IT Minister

India is now focused on entering the 28 nm and above configuration chip band to meet the needs of automotive, telecom, electricity, and trains before moving on to sub-7 nm chip bands, according to Ashwini Vaishnaw, Ministry of electronics and information technology.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Vaishnaw said that the demand for chips above 28 nm was still there, and India would capture that market first. The government, he said, was also ensuring that there was a well-rounded semiconductor ecosystem in India, as per economic times.

“We have close to 300,000 design engineers designing practically every complex chip that is manufactured in the world. So, it is very natural to move on to the value chain and towards manufacturing. We are looking at developing the complete ecosystem of semiconductors,” Vaishnaw said at a panel at the WEF.

The world has recently come to trust India more because of the manner it has conducted its foreign policy, which has become a valuable asset for the country, he stated. He stated that India has inked cooperation agreements with the United States, the European Union, and Japan, and that it was collaborating with South Korean companies in the semiconductor industry.

“We think there is enough for everybody. It is a question of how much importance we give, how much talent we put in it and how focused we are on it,” he said.

The most important objective, he added, is semiconductor design, where the country is transitioning from being a back office for fabrication businesses to generating the full chip and going out to customers to take a concept and produce the entire integrated circuit.
