With the establishment of a new Center of Excellence (CoE) in Karnataka, India is progressing in the areas of quantum and 6G technology. The project is a part of the Ministry of Communications' 100-day program designed to foster innovation in these cutting-edge areas. It is a partnership between the Telecom Centre of Excellence (TCOE) India and Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU).
The CoE will be centered on advancing developments in quantum technology and related fields, with its headquarters located at VTU Visvesvaraya Research and Innovation Foundation (VRIF) in Bangalore. Utilizing the intellectual and physical resources of VTU's 228 affiliated colleges, the center will operate under a hub-and-spoke paradigm, promoting cooperation and quick innovation in 5G and 6G technologies.
This new hub will collaborate closely with organizations like the Telecom Engineering Centre (TEC), Bharat 6G Alliance, and TSDSI, as well as academic networks and the startup ecosystem. It will also bring together specialist groups that are focused on particular areas of innovation.
With more than 400,000 students, 2,000 PhDs, and numerous researchers connected to VTU, the CoE will be essential in boosting innovation, commercialization, and research of ground-breaking technology.
Chowdhury Said “As we started to work, we looked at how many scientists and PIs are working in this field and found that India had around 600 scientists and 40 to 50 start-ups in quantum technology." He added that the country is doing "tremendous amounts of work" in the sector.
