LG Innotek, an electronic component producer of the LG Group and a part of Boston Dynamics, is pursuing innovation in the field of vision sensing for robot systems. On Monday, details were also uncovered about the joint effort to contribute towards the design of the state-of-the-art module meant to become the “eyes” of Boston Dynamics’ ground-breaking humanoid robot, Atlas.
“By collaborating with Boston Dynamics, a world leader in robotics, LG Innotek will gain an advantage in the robotics components market,” said LG Innotek CEO Moon Hyuk-soo. “We will continue to introduce core components for robots that lead the robotics era and create differentiated customer value.”
LG Innotek will put the vision-sensing module using RGB cameras and 3D sensing parts with robots having accurate perception of the environment in all challenging situations i.e. darkness or extreme weather. Boston dynamics will develop processing software that will make sense of the data gathered from the module to increase the robot’s environmental understanding.
By leveraging its experience in optical technology, LG Innotek aggregates successful camera module possibilities of its participation in smartphones and self-driving vehicles. LG Innotek previously showed its Sensor Pod at CES 2023 that includes sophisticated sensing equipment for autonomous drives.
Looking ahead, LG Innotek plans to deepen its collaboration with Boston Dynamics, exploring applications of its broader technology portfolio in robotics. “We are excited to partner with LG Innotek to drive innovation and redefine the development of robot eyes,” said Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter. “Robots should be able to see, process and perceive the world as well as humans. It is my hope that by working together, we will develop groundbreaking vision systems that are as advanced as the cameras in your mobile phones.”
This collaboration establishes LG Innotek’s importance in the rapidly growing robotics components industry as defined by Boston Dynamics’ goal of developing advanced, perceptive robots.
